The First Steps To Getting Your Drivers License

Getting your drivers license involve a certain process that you need to complete so you can legally be allowed to drive around the UK. Without this license, you cannot drive your own vehicle and you will be stuck to either walking or riding the public transport.

The process will also cost you money. This is why you need to make sure that you will only go through it once.

Important first step to take your drivers license

Let us start with the very first step that you need to accomplish – applying for a provisional license. Some people mistakenly believe that you need to learn how to drive first before you can get this license. This is incorrect. You cannot learn how to drive unless you have this. You will not be allowed to drive any vehicle – even if it is for the purpose of learning how to drive and with the presence of a licensed instructor.

To apply for a provisional license, you need to be at least 15 years and 9 months old. You also have the option to do it through post or online. You are encouraged to choose the latter because it will cost you £34 compared to paying £43 when you apply by post.

When applying online, you need to show a valid UK passport or any official document that will prove your identity. If you choose to apply by post, you need to go to the local post office to complete the D1 provisional application form. You will then send it to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). Another option to get the form is to download it or request the DVLA to send it to you. This usually takes 2 weeks to complete.

Steps to getting your drivers license

After you have completed the first step to getting your drivers license, you should proceed with the following steps.

Learn how to drive

With your provisional drivers license, you can now get behind the wheel to learn how to drive a car. This license does not mean you can already drive on your own. Someone with a professional license should accompany you at all times.

Study for the theory test

There are so many things to learn about driving. You also have to familiarise yourself with the traffic rules. Unless you can pass this test, you will not be given your license. Fortunately for you, there are many online driving license theory tests that you can use to practise on. These will increase your chances of passing the actual exam with the DVLA.

Schedule your theory and driving test

Once you have learned how to drive and you are confident that you can pass the theory test, you can go ahead and schedule it. You are encouraged to book the tests on a weekday so it will not cost you a lot of money. Ask your driving instructor if they think that you are ready to take the test. If not, keep on practising. You should also take note that you cannot book a driving test unless you have passed the theory test. Once that part is done, you can book the driving test through phone or online. On the date of your driving test, make sure you bring your provisional driving license and your own car – or that of the driving instructor.

Complete these steps so you will not have a hard time getting your drivers license.
